The permitted development rules have recently been relaxed, allowing you to construct an extension of up to six metres without obtaining planning approval (or eight metres if your house is detached). Anything higher than this requires planning permission.
The majority of planning permission applications typically take eight weeks. Generally speaking, this is the case unless the proposed project is large or difficult, in which case a judgement must be made within 13 weeks.
