Installing a new kitchen is not only an aesthetic upgrade but often a necessity for functionality. However, questions about the “kitchen fitting cost” often cloud the excitement. This article will demystify the costs associated with fitting a new kitchen, from labour to kitchen units and everything in between. If you’re considering a kitchen revamp and wondering, “how much does a new kitchen cost?”, this guide is a must-read for you.
Why Do You Need a New Kitchen?
Importance of Functionality
The need for a new kitchen could arise for a multitude of reasons. Your existing kitchen might be outdated, or perhaps you want to upgrade to a more functional and modern design. A well-thought-out kitchen design can significantly improve your cooking experience, making the cost of installing a new kitchen a worthwhile investment.
Aesthetic Considerations
Beyond functionality, the aesthetic appeal of a new kitchen can also significantly influence your daily life. A new kitchen could brighten up your home and give it a fresh, modern look, making it well worth the cost.
What Factors Influence the Cost of a New Kitchen?
Size Matters
The size of your kitchen—whether it’s a small kitchen or a large kitchen—plays a significant role in the total cost. More square footage often means higher kitchen fitting costs due to the need for more kitchen units, worktops, and potentially more complex installations.
Complexity and Design Choices
Other factors like design complexity, the types of kitchen cabinets, and kitchen worktop materials can also affect the total cost. For instance, a bespoke kitchen with custom cabinetry will almost certainly cost more than a standard fitted kitchen.
Average Cost Based on Size and Complexity
| Kitchen Size | Standard Kitchen (£) | Bespoke Kitchen (£) |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 5,000 – 7,000 | 8,000 – 12,000 |
| Medium | 7,000 – 10,000 | 12,000 – 16,000 |
| Large | 10,000 – 14,000 | 16,000 – 20,000 |
What is the Average Cost of Fitting a New Kitchen?
A General Range
In the UK, the average cost of fitting a new kitchen ranges between £5,000 and £14,000. These costs include kitchen units, kitchen worktops, and labour. Keep in mind that these figures are approximate and can vary based on a number of factors, including the average cost of kitchen fitting in your area.
Hidden Costs
Be aware of potential hidden costs like plumbing and electrical work that may not be included in a basic kitchen installation cost quote. Always inquire about what is covered under the quoted price to avoid surprises.
Hidden Costs
| Hidden Costs | Estimated Cost (£) |
|---|---|
| Electrical Work | 300 – 700 |
| Plumbing | 400 – 900 |
| Old Kitchen Removal | 200 – 500 |
How to Calculate the Installation Costs?
Using Calculators
You can use a kitchen installation cost calculator to estimate the cost of your new kitchen. These calculators usually consider various aspects such as the size of the kitchen, kitchen units, and labour.
Getting Quotes
While calculators give you a rough estimate, it’s always advisable to get quotes from multiple professional kitchen fitters. They can provide more accurate costs after evaluating your specific requirements.
Things to Consider When Getting Quotes
- Confirm if VAT is included
- Ask for a detailed breakdown of costs
- Check if waste removal is part of the service
What Does Professional Kitchen Fitting Include?
Removal of the Old Kitchen
Professional kitchen fitting usually starts with removing the old kitchen units. It can also include disposing of the old units, which may incur an additional cost.
Installation of New Units
The fitting process involves the installation of new kitchen units, appliances, and other features like sinks and faucets. Hiring a professional kitchen fitter ensures that all these are done to a high standard but also contributes to the overall kitchen installation cost.
How Much Does Labour Cost?
Hourly Rates
Labour costs for fitting a kitchen in the UK vary depending on the complexity of the project. Typical hourly rates can range from £20 to £60. This rate will vary depending on the kitchen fitter’s level of expertise and the region you are in.
Project-based Costs
Some kitchen fitters prefer to charge a flat rate for the entire project. Make sure to clarify whether the quote you receive is an hourly rate or a total project cost.
Average Labour Costs
| Task | Hourly Rate (£) |
|---|---|
| Basic Installation | 20 – 30 |
| Electrical Work | 40 – 60 |
| Plumbing | 30 – 50 |
How Do Kitchen Appliances Factor Into the Cost?
Essentials vs Luxuries
While essentials like a stove and refrigerator are usually considered necessary, luxuries like a wine cooler can add significantly to your new kitchen cost. Make sure to prioritize your appliance choices based on your budget and needs.
Brand Matters
High-end brands will certainly increase your kitchen fitting costs, but they may offer better long-term value. It’s essential to balance quality and price when choosing appliances.
Average Cost of Kitchen Appliances
| Appliance | Essential (£) | Luxury (£) |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator | 300 – 800 | 1,000 – 3,000 |
| Oven | 400 – 900 | 1,200 – 5,000 |
| Dishwasher | 200 – 500 | 700 – 2,000 |
