Rainbow Building Plumbing & Electrical Services is proud to offer high-quality structural engineering services in Hove. We understand the importance of structural engineering for building safety and longevity, which is why we have partnered with QED Structures to provide top-notch services to our clients.
QED Structures can complete a structural engineering site visit for £350 +VAT. By sending them a photo of the wall you are looking to remove, they can mark a location where they would need to make a small opening at the head of the wall/ceiling to confirm if the wall is load bearing or not. If the wall is found to be non-load bearing then there are no further costs, however if identified to be load bearing a further £300+VAT would be charged for the steel beam specification and calculations.

If you notice cracks on your walls (internal or external), or suspect subsidence, it is always a good idea to consult with a professional structural engineer.
If you do nothing, your property may be at risk.
A structural engineer/surveyor will carry out an investigation to determine the true cause of any structural concerns you may have, this may include, using equipment such as a Wall Scanner. This device uses radar technology to analyse beams and assists with determining if a wall is load-bearing or not. Once they have completed their inspection of the property, the structural engineer will compile a report detailing his findings along with recommendations as to how to remedy any issues found.
A structural engineer should have a BSc Honours in Structural Engineering as well as a PhD in Structural Engineering. This gives you the confidence that the engineer who will be visiting your property has received the highest level of professional education and training.
A crack in the joint between an extension and the main property can occur for a variety of reasons. One reason could be poor workmanship or a lack of appropriate wall ties, or it could be due to poor foundations being laid during construction. Other reasons can be quite broad and numerous, such as thermal expansion, tree roots, drainage issues, and so on.
If you have cracks above your windows, this could be due to failed lintels or the replacement of windows that were previously supporting the load above. Subsidence could be another reason. A thorough structural engineer inspection will determine the cause and make recommendations for corrective action.
